Mathematics focus and overall aim and focus for the three research lesson sequence.  Use of Inquiry maths to encourage students to regulate their own learning and promote mathematical reasoning.
We will investigate how adept students are at forming their own questions and then developing lines of inquiry and applying a systematic approach to solving problems. Students often struggle to reason mathematically to support their solutions and make connections across multiple mathematical concepts. The Inquiry maths approach is designed to develop these elements within students which is why this approach has been adopted for the research lessons.
The aim therefore, of the research lessons is to use an Inquiry based approach to observe students response and impact on their ability to become resourceful learners.
Does the Inquiry maths approach impact on their conceptual understanding of the Equivalence of Fractions, Decimals and Percentages? Does this approach develop the skills of the students to become resourceful learners? If so, how? If not, why not? Is there sufficient challenge for the most able within the set? To explore how questioning can be used more effectively to facilitate learning and critical thinking? To develop an approach for consistent, accurate formative assessment of progress against success criteria from the Schemes of Work (in this case): · Understand that a percentage means ‘number of parts per hundred’ · Write a percentage as a fraction · Write a quantity as a percentage of another
